Ahh, Poetry. Poetry is an art. Artists can never "master" a certain art form, as art is subjective. This applies to all, poetry, story writing, screenwriting, drawing, dancing, singing etc.
So writing poetry while thinking you can become the best can be a good motivation, but it shouldn't be a goal. That is why, you shouldn't write to be the best, rather you should strive for the better. I am not a professional writer but I write for fun. So I hope my tips are helpful to you all.
1. Brainstorming
The first step to writing poetry is brainstorming. Think. Think hard. There are three things which you have to ponder about.
1. Theme
Is there a certain message or topic you're conveying? Are you retelling a folktale? Any reason? Or are the words just flowing out naturally? Think about the theme/ topic which is conveyed through the poem.
Also think about the emotion, if it is a happy, sad, frustrated etc. If you know the themes and the emotions, you can choose the right metaphors and the fitting words for your poetry :)
2. Imagery
Describe, but you can't keep it in long paragraphs like stories, you have to sum it up in a line or a few words. That is why the words used also matter. Imagery unites the writer/ speaker and the reader/ listener.
3. Word choice
Add flavour to your poem. Why use a word which the reader will have no attached feelings to, rather than using a much effective word than it?
You can also use rhymes, alliteration to make your poem interesting to listen/ read to.
2. Writing it
1. Write ittttttttt
Write it again and again and again and again and again. Many times I have written a line which I myself don't understand. There are many other incidents which happen. So rewrite it again and again for better substitutes for lines. Look for better alternative words and change up a few lines.
3. Review
Now you can do it yourself or let others do it. I do both. Before presenting it to anyone, I polish it up to what suits me the best. In that polishing stage, I write it again for the last time and it shows a lot of change.
Now, show it to others. This is the stage where you get critiques and praises. I publish my poems on critique websites like youngwriterssociety.com. I also show it to my family, but the problem is that my family doesn't have writers nor anyone is interested in it. I get confused looks or fake praises. That is why I prefer publishing it on websites rather than showing it to a close relative.
Now for special, I want to show you all my poetry. You are free to critique it with your honest reviews :)
"Eunoia"
A writer has a thousand jobs,
playing the roles of different odds
Sometimes of a patient mediator,
or fighting monsters with swords
Their ability to save lives is zero,
but the can play a dauntless hero
They can become mystical for fun,
or get lost in a world like Chihiro
They can manipulate water to water bend,
also perform as a reliable best friend
But how do they do all this?
They play the simple act of pretend

That's it friends! And remember that your poetry doesn't have to be in this order or you have to specifically write in this order. It is just for me and whoever that finds it useful, even you, I guess ^_~
